The table is visible in your browser, but Google Sheets returns an error, an empty result, or the wrong set of rows. When IMPORTHTML is not working, repeatedly changing the formula can consume more time than the task itself.
Start by checking the address, the selected table, and the full error message. If you need a snapshot of the data already open in your browser, you can also try extracting that page to CSV and importing the file into Sheets. This gives you another route to the analysis without requiring a working connection to the original website.
Work out what the error actually means
Google's IMPORTHTML reference explains that the function selects a table or list using its URL and an index in the HTML. The main table on the screen is not necessarily the first table in the document. A navigation block or another table may come before it.
An empty result does not identify a single cause. The address may have changed, the index may point elsewhere, or the website may return different content to a separate request. Data that appears after loading or depends on your signed-in session also needs closer investigation. For request limits and access messages, use Google's import-function troubleshooting guidance rather than treating every error as a table-selection problem.
Recover the table in five steps
-
Check the exact source. Open the URL used by the formula. Confirm that it reaches the report you want, with the expected date range and filters. Review whether the function is looking for a table or a list, and whether the index matches the intended structure. Keep the error message available while checking these settings.
-
Look for a built-in export. A CSV download from the website may already contain everything you need. Check whether it exports the current filters or the entire report. If the website offers a suitable official file, use it instead of rebuilding that export. A smaller file with the right scope is often easier to verify than a broad extraction.
If you need the table currently displayed, try Sidelight AI Assistant on the page you already have open. You can ask for specific columns and a downloadable file without describing the underlying HTML.
-
Request a small sample first. Open the table in Chrome or Edge, sign in to the source website if needed, and apply the relevant filters. Open the assistant and limit the first request to the current results page. For a product table, you could use:
Extract the rows from this table on the current page only. Include product name, displayed price, currency, and product link. Preserve the values shown, identify missing fields, and report the number of rows you obtained. Save the result as CSV. Do not estimate missing values or visit additional pages.
-
Compare the sample with the source. Check several products, including one with a missing field or a promotional price. Verify that each link belongs to the correct row. If a column has been misunderstood, clarify it before collecting more records. The Sidelight AI Assistant table-export guide explains how to define the fields and scope of an extraction.
-
Import the CSV into a separate sheet. In Google Sheets, choose File → Import and select the downloaded file. Keep your existing analysis intact while checking the new data. Review the separator and destination using Google's file-import instructions, then confirm that the fields appear in the correct columns.
Fix problems in the imported file
If every value lands in one column, revisit the separator setting. Avoid replacing every comma in the file: commas can legitimately appear inside descriptions or numeric values.
Check dates, decimal separators, and identifiers with leading zeros. Spreadsheet interpretation can change their meaning even when the original CSV contains the correct text. Keep the downloaded file so you can distinguish an extraction mistake from an import conversion.
Frequently asked questions
Why are only the first rows included? The website may have pagination or load records as you scroll. Ask for a bounded extension of the task and a report of what was reached. A downloaded file alone does not establish completeness.
Will the imported table update automatically? No. This workflow creates a snapshot. New data requires another export and import, or a suitable official connection.
Does the AI process everything locally? The page content needed for your request is sent through the service to the model provider. Read the privacy policy before using sensitive reports.
Once you have checked the ordinary formula issues, use Sidelight AI Assistant to try a small CSV extraction from your open table and verify it before expanding the task.
